Online Audio Advertising – Apples’s iRadio enters the market

7 Jun

Rumour has it that next week Apple will release the iRadio service at its annual developer’s conference. From our point of view, the key questions are:

a)            How will this service stack up next to the likes of Spotify, Pandora, Deezer, We7/Blinkbox and Google to name but a few?

b)            Will Apple be able to convert their mass scale – into a workable pipeline of micro-targeted online audio advertising inventory?

The principle that Radio Experts apply to all launches in this arena is simple……….if it will work for our advertisers, then it will work. So is there likely to be enough opportunity and enough inventory for our advertisers?

Well, Apple are certainly doing their best. To turbo charge the launch they have penned deals with many of the bigger music labels (Warner, Sony, Universal etc) so they’ll have the tracks people want. Ad serving technology, integrated campaign flexibility, reporting systems and open book serving stats are still fences that we need to see how they hurdle.

What is clear is that Apple’s iRadio will be a major entry in what is fast becoming a busy online audio advertising marketplace.

To find out more about the fast evolving world of Online Audio Advertising  and what it can do for your brands, give us a shout now…….we’re on it.

The Spotify Play Button

11 Apr

Spotify today announces the release of its ‘Play’ button for website owners. Named the Spotify Play button this a widget for website developers to use across their sites to enable people to listen to music directly from their site (with the help of a Spotify account).

Adding this Spotify widget will have a dual effect at least initially, driving new registrations to Spotify but also opening up a new arena of how music resources is referenced online. For example, if a journalist is discussing a track in a review – he/she can provide the Spotify widget link to the track right there. Likewise, if we at Radio Experts are giving customers a sense of what track might be a good style guide for some radio creative concepts we can display this for them via a Spotify widget on a public page. One of the most interesting aspects here is how ‘easy access’ to the right tracks will drive newsworthiness and make musical comment a lower hanging option for the content hungry news marketplace

No wonder Spotify have already announced that blogging platform tumblr, The Guardian, Time Out Group, The Huffington Post, The Independent, NME, Rolling Stone and MSN UK are partnering up with them.

Watching the music industry’s digital reinvention has been fascinating so far…this promises to be yet another page turning chapter. We make sure our advertisers are well versed in what Spotify and other Radio On Demand platforms can do for them and their click through ratios – these changes open up more and more possibilities for us to recommend skilful  audio placement to the marketplace.

Car drivers get ‘appier with radio…

22 Mar

So apps in cars are not anything new, ever since the release of the iphone and the in-car handsfree kit, it has been clear that the car dashboard is crying out for a set of car related apps. This year sees the US launch of the first car with internet connected apps as standard. OK so it’ll be a while until we can all afford a Lexus GS Sport Saloon, but these innovations will eventually filter down into all cars.

What’s important about this car is that it has access to Pandora Radio direct from the car’s dashboard (something which could have been done since 2010 with a good Pioneer stereo and an iPhone but never directly from the car’s entertainment system).

Radio On Demand listening and the idea that audio doesn’t have to come from a traditional radio broadcast is increasingly changing the way in which people listen to radio/broadcast audio/podcasts/music/talkshows. But the important thing is they’re still listening…

Plus with the power of internet connected devices and web signup (required for services such as Pandora/Spotify/Absolute In Stream, We7 etc) there’s audience data galore. And audience data means lots of juicy pinpoint targeting opportunities for advertisers. So….yes…..that means if a certain astrologically named chocolate bar brand (starts with m and rhymes with cars), wants to target men aged 20-40 who are driving in their white vans listening to their favourite Shanks and Bigfoot track.……we can connect the advertiser to the vehicle to the driver and everybody gets their sweet as chocolate moment.

The Radio Experts’ On Demand service is here to guide you through the maze of an exciting and changing audio advertising marketplace. you can follow us on twitter @ukradioexperts to find out more, or drop us an email even call on 0207 841 8744.

X-Rated Dave Berry gives Capital Breakfast a good look

1 Dec

Former XFM Breakfast presenter Dave Berry has just been announced as the new Breakfast Show presenter for Capital FM in London.

From Jan 2012 Dave Berry and Lisa Snowdon will team up to try to keep Capital as London’s most popular Breakfast. Berry himself has had a roller-coaster ride to the breakfast summit. The former male model’s metrosexual ying could be a perfect counterpart to Lisa Snowdon’s foxy WAG yang. Millions of Londoners will be holding their breath and pausing their cornflakes to see whether we get on air chemistry or boredcast monotony.

Berry’s Xfm Breakfast Show experience will be thoroughly tested under the intense scrutiny that comes with London’s number one breakfast slot, with the burning question to the fore “can Berry fill Johnny Vaughan’s shoes?” (from detailed visual analysis of photos of their feet from the Radio Experts back office staff we think he can).

Berry actually did a stand in stint as Capital’s Breakfast presenter just recently (hmmmmm…..suspiciously convenient in retrospect) meeting with some acclaim, some medium approval and some predictable ‘where’s Johnny?’ type reactions. Dave Berry may not be the big name that some thought Capital Breakfast would have lined up but investing in young internal talent is not a bad thing really is it?

We’re sure that the ratings will be watched hawkishly over at Leicester Square. Will Berry’s compote sweeten Snowdon’s Pro-biotic Breakfast bowl?…….. we wait and listen with interest.

Spotify Changes and We7 strengthens

15 Apr

Radio Experts On Demand service is one of the most fun parts of our business. This is the bit where we work with all the great music sites like Spotify, We7, Pandora, Myspace music, Last FMMusicovery, Grooveshark and others.

The opportunity for our advertisers is to place audio ads that generate targeted hits on registered users and encourage awesome levels of click through to our customer’s websites. The CTRs and conversion ratios we see are truly stunning at times, that’s why we love it!

Just recently we’ve been working closely with the team at We7 and assessing their latest figures, it makes for interesting reading. Their We7Radio product is a real game changer, using scrobbling technology, users identify the type of music they like, for example Kings of Leon and they listen to a constant flow of tracks from either Kings of Leon or music of a similar genre.

Most importantly to us, we can use We7 to hit registered users all across the UK with targeted ad messages, so if we want to speak to 35-54 users living in Greater Manchester we can do that, equally we can go for 25-44 females in Greater London. Whoever your brand needs to reach, We7 can generally offer us that audience for you.

They now have over 1 million registered users and are also bound to see a boom in registered users following the change in the free music policy at Spotify, their main market competitor.

For more information about We7 and how we can use it to place clever audio in front of your target audience , just give us a call or send us an email……it’s one of our favourite things to talk about!

Welcome to the UK Radio Player

31 Mar

All across the country excited people this morning leapt out of their beds two hours before their faulty iphone4 alarms went off (sorry Apple) and prepared themselves for something big in the world of radio and the internet.

The launch of UK Radio Player

radioplayer

So, what’s so exciting about UK Radio Player? Well, it’s a web application that allows you to listen to more or less all radio stations / commercial and or BBC from the one dashboard. Choose by music style, artist, station name, geography etc…you get the point, it’s searchable and clever. A One stop shop.

Perhaps most remarkably it represents a real team effort from the commercial radio and non commercial radio sector.

The fundamental aim of UK Radio Player is to grab more consumer advertising consumption hours for radio and in particular for online radio. By offering a one stop shop, some of the measures coming out of UK Radio Player will be interesting to factor into the overall market too.

We’ve spent months looking at the prototype and understanding the innards of this evolution. As of today, it’s available to all.
