Summer Lovin’

The clocks move forward this weekend, marking the start of British Summer Time. We’re all looking forward to warmer weather, but both the UK ad market and commercial radio have seen things hotting up for some time.

The UK was recently cited as the stand-out ad market in Europe, with advertising spend this year forecast to outperform the Western and Central Europe region. In addition, radio advertising spend in the UK is predicted to be up by 5%.

The latest RAJAR figures also revealed that, for the first time in 15 years, commercial radio has more listeners than the BBC.

The start of British Summer Time brings people out of their cocoons. The population starts getting out and about, engaging in more outdoor leisure pursuits, holidays and gardening activities – very often taking the radio with them wherever they go. This is an ideal opportunity for businesses to use radio to promote their products and services locally, using established radio brands such as Heart, Capital, Smooth, Radio X and the City Network.

For wider reach, there are strong national brands, such as Classic FM, talkSPORT, Absolute and Magic. In addition, there are now 18 stations broadcasting on the second national digital multiplex – many new to the national marketplace. These include talkRADIO, talkSPORT2, Share Radio, Mellow Magic, Magic Chilled, Sunrise Radio, Panjab Radio and Fun Kids. These stations are already broadcasting, but they are soon to be joined by the return of “Virgin Radio”, which launches on the 30th of March.

Welcome to the UK Radio Player

All across the country excited people this morning leapt out of their beds two hours before their faulty iphone4 alarms went off (sorry Apple) and prepared themselves for something big in the world of radio and the internet.

The launch of UK Radio Player

So, what’s so exciting about UK Radio Player? Well, it’s a web application that allows you to listen to more or less all radio stations / commercial and or BBC from the one dashboard. Choose by music style, artist, station name, geography etc…you get the point, it’s searchable and clever. A One stop shop.

Perhaps most remarkably it represents a real team effort from the commercial radio and non commercial radio sector.

The fundamental aim of UK Radio Player is to grab more consumer advertising consumption hours for radio and in particular for online radio. By offering a one stop shop, some of the measures coming out of UK Radio Player will be interesting to factor into the overall market too.

We’ve spent months looking at the prototype and understanding the innards of this evolution. As of today, it’s available to all.

Radio Expert talks Radio Advertising on BBC Radio Five Live

Once again the media industry turns to Radio Experts for expert comment on all things radio. Click here to listen to our Managing Partner, Tim Cowland speaking to Peter Allen, Aasmah Mir and Radio 5’s near 7 million weekly listeners.

The subject was an anti terrorism radio campaign and it appeared on the afternoon drivetime show (5 Live Drive). As you can hear, Tim didn’t pull any punches as he fought the corner for the commercial radio industry.
